That’s a Rap

Essential Outcome(s) Level(s)
Students will…

  • write a 4-measure rap within the specified structure and create a rhythmic backing to accompany themselves. 
2nd-8th Grade
  1. As a group, keep a steady beat using body percussion (hand claps, knee taps, etc.)
  2. Practice saying your example rap over and over (here’s a starting place).
  3. Ask students to write a rap using their name, a place, a thing. They can work  individually or in pairs.
  4. Open Soundtrap and create a new project using the blank template. 
  5. Add a new track, select drum kits. 
  6. Continue to build.
  7. Use a pre-recorded loop from the loop library at the temp of approximately 90 bpm.
  8. Record 8 measures. 
  9. Start the backing track that was recorded and after two measures, start recording the rap that was previously created. 
Extended Learning
  1. Invite the students to video record each other performing their raps and publish on the school social media avenues or class website. 


This lesson was created by Meredith Allen and inspired by Katie Wardrobe. Prior to joining the Soundtrap team, Meredith served as an Instructional Technology Consultant at Prairie Lakes Area Education Agency in Iowa.  Preceding her consulting, Meredith taught instrumental music, K-7 technology and facilitated a district’s Virtual Reality Education Pathfinders program. She also served on their District Leadership Team, served as the district’s Technology Integrationist, and assisted with implementation of the district’s 1:1 computing initiative.Meredith has a Master’s of Science in Technology for Education and Training and participated in the 2016 Iowa cohort of the national Teacher Leadership Initiative.
